We’ve been working secretively for well over a year on redesigning the Pacific City Graphics logo and brand and it’s finally time to test the waters. I wanted to use my personal website as a ‘focus group’ if you will, and see what you all have to say about the redesign.

The original Pacific City Graphics logo was designed 25 years ago by my father, Brent Stockton. At the time, he and a few of his buddies had the idea to start up a commercial printing company to serve the tri-state area. At some point during the birth of the company name and logo design someone noted that South Sioux City was previously named Pacific City, and so the name was born. The old logo was traditionally designed and has held solid for the company for over 25 years, but I really felt that the logo was more Miami Vice than we needed.

My main goal when starting the logo concept for Pacific City was to create an icon that tells who we are and what we do, rather than strictly a logotype with only words. We are much more than a printing company and are establishing ourselves as a communications provider, so I ended up creating a modern speech bubble graphic that also helps the C letter also serve as a G in the main acronym.

Now that we are nearing the end of development and are working on a strict branding schedule I feel very satisfied with the final product…but what do you think?

I’ve worked professionally for a graphic designer for 5 years, yet consider myself an amatuer. Even at my amatuer status, I realize there are several no brainers when it comes to a company, it’s image and the impact it can have on the company’s overall success. In the first part of what could be an infinite series I wanted to talk about signage and how important it is to your organization.

While driving the other day I noticed a horrible re-design / partial take-over / joke for a sign and couldn’t help but take a few snapshots. I was sure that they’d fix the blunder as soon as they noticed, however the sign is now in worse shape that the picture below. Not sure if I would feel comfortable giving my hard earned money to a company that can’t afford anything more than a canvas banner and some string.
